Into the Jungle
Multi Genre / Dimensional Frequencies

Do you remember the night when Heavy came to HA? That, as we all know, is a story of lost opportunities, of possibilities that haunt the history of Hidden Agenda, waiting to be resurrected. We are going to put these possibilities back into play as Hidden Agenda bids farewell to Tai Yip Street, but we don’t mean this as a farewell gesture. Rather, you should think of it as a new beginning, the repetition of an encounter that never quite took form. Zams, of course, was seized, arrested, swept up by this encounter with the party world from the start, when he was working behind the boards that night in Hidden Agenda. Since then, who knows how many people have entered and passed through HA’s doors, who knows how much time has passed into oblivion, never to be remembered again…We’ve had quite enough of that!!! Let me tell you a little something about what the party means to us, and why we insist that it is an inseparable part of our lives. The party is the space of conspiracy where ties, imperceptible but intimate, are woven, where all of our solitudes become something else when they are placed next to one another, where different temporalities and rhythms unmoor themselves from the chronometer that regulates our lives…It is on this note that we at 9F, along with our friends from Heavy Hong Kong and Soul Healing extend our arms towards you, in the hope that you will enter the jungle with us, in our pursuit of the unknown…

“In the middle of 2009, Heavy Hong Kong, aware that the Hidden Agenda sound system was ill-equipped to handle the pressure of deep bass music and reggae, brought their own rig for a jam at HA. Immediately, the differences between a typical band show and a DJ party were evident. A band show usually ends at midnight, while ravers only really start arriving at midnight, parties tending to go all the way till 4 or 5 in the morning. It was then that I met Lai Fai/DJ Blood Dunza, the man responsible for Heavy Hong Kong. The clash between the two cultures also produced some friction- several members of the HA crew had to wake up early in the morning for work and weren’t accustomed to keeping such late hours, particularly since some of that time was spent cleaning up the beer cans and bottles left behind by ravers who weren’t too well versed in waste disposal etiquette. From that night onwards, HA has not been inclined to hold another party. For myself, however, that virginal encounter with bass pressure was an immensely important and formative experience, and it always vexed me to feel that I couldn’t share this joy with anybody but Dicky Lo, a 1st generation HA member who would later go on to become a soundman for Heavy Hongkong. The next year would mark the first real collaboration between Heavy and the underground band scene, as Djs span in a space next to bands playing under a bridge in Kwun Tong. …”
